Abstract
A HPLC instrument must meet a number of challenging requirements to provide high-quality, reliable results. Typically, the design of a state-of-the-art HPLC instrument is such that all possible types of separations can be conducted. This requires a flexible pump to conduct isocratic and solvent gradient separations, a column oven for stable temperature conditions and a set of detectors that can provide quantitative information on a number of molecular parameters. Criteria that have to be met by any HPLC instrument are listed in Table 4.1.
