Abstract
One of the main problems that impact the performance of crosslingual information retrieval (CLIR) systems is how the users express their information need in form of a query. Traditional CLIR systems are not fully effective when the user need is not expressed appropriately. The difficulty lies in dealing with the natural lexical ambiguity of the source and target language, which is not a trivial task that can be resolved fully automatic. Therefore, there is a need for systems that support users to overcome these shortcomings. In this chapter, we first discuss selected state-of-the art CLIR tools. The considered tools are web-based and support interactive translation processes. Based on the state-of-the-art review, we discuss identified issues and shortcomings and thus motivate requirements for CLIR tools that could improve retrieval performance. Finally, we propose an interactive approach that fulfils several of these requirements. It considers the user as an integral part of the CLIR process, in that the user can interact with provided contextual information in a way that allows to interactively improve the translation and thus improve the overall performance of the CLIR process.
