„Die Freunde meines Kindes sind …“ Wie würden Sie den Satz beenden? Die Internet-Suchmaschine Google listet für diesen Satz in 0,20 Sekunden 754.000 Treffer (zugegriffen: 31. Januar 2012). Darunter: „Ich mag den Freund meines Kindes nicht“, „Ich weiß, man kann nichts erzwingen, aber wie soll … Freunde finden?“, „Der falsche Umgang: Wenn mir die Freunde meines Kindes suspekt sind“, „Wenn das Kind die falschen Freunde mitbringt“, „Der Freund meines Kindes beleidigt mich“, „Was tun, wenn der beste Freund des Kindes einen beklaut?“ oder „Nun hat es auch Madonna erwischt: Tochter Lourdes hat ihren ersten Freund“. An diesen Mitteilungen und Fragen wird bereits deutlich, wie widersprüchlich und vielfältig jene Gruppe ist, die wir als „Gleichaltrige“ bezeichnen: zwischen diffuser Ablehnung und dem Wunsch, das Kind möge Freunde finden, zwischen Konflikten mit den Freunden der Kinder und den Sorgen um richtige Freunde bis hin zu der Frage, wie man als Eltern mit den ersten romantischen Beziehungen der Kinder umgehen soll.
