Abstract
Basidiolichens of the genera Multiclavula, Marchandiomphalina, Athelia, Athelopsis, Lepidostroma, Dictyonema, Cora, Acantholichen, Cyphellostereum, Lichenomphalia, and Semiomphalina are reviewed. Their myco- and phycobionts are treated comparatively. Morphology, physiology, phytochemistry, ecology, dispersal, and distribution of species are discussed. Culture experiments to synthesize basidiolichens are reported. Special emphasis is paid to phylogenetic systematics and evolution of these mutualistic organisms. According to various molecularly based phylogenetic trees of the mycobionts, there are at least four convergent evolutionary lines within the Agaricomycetes. Two major groups of photobionts, Rhizonema of the cyanobacteria, and mainly Coccomyxa of the Chlorophyta are symbiotic partners. The cellular interaction of Dictyonema, Cora, Acantholichen, and possibly also Cyphellostereum fungi with Rhizonema trichomes represents a unique type within all lichens.
