Abstract

Before the calculation of numerical stellar models became fast and efficient enough, a lot of insight into the physics of stars came from using polytropic models. Although they have gone out of fashion for some time, their importance for acquiring some basic understanding of stars has always been high enough to still warrant a chapter dedicated to them. Some of the results obtained in the following will prove to be useful in later chapters of this book.
