Abstract

Since the semiconductor laser has unique features of high gain, low facet reflectivity, and amplitude-phase coupling through the \(\alpha \) parameter, it is also sensitive to optical injection from a different laser. Locking and unlocking phenomena in optically injected semiconductor lasers have been extensively studied. Especially optical injection locking has been appreciated as a useful tool for controlling and stabilizing laser oscillations. The general application of optical injection is to control the laser and the locking condition is extensively investigated to distinguish the unlocking phenomena. However, little attention has been paid to the unlocking dynamics. Recent studies proved that rich varieties of dynamics such as the four-wave mixing, period-doubling route to chaos, and non-locking beating, are involved in the unlocking region. In this chapter, we focus on the dynamic characteristics of locking and unlocking regimes in optically injected semiconductor lasers.
