Abstract

A bird’s body is covered with markings, such as crests and protrusions that acquire exotic forms. Moreover, it displays varied colours that defy imagination and which build geometric figures that are sharply delimited. These unexpected displays of pattern have been seen as ”bizarre events” that demanded little attention, but they can now be recognized as key phenomena that are guided by well defined molecular mechanisms.
