Abstract
In attempting to summarise the papers presented on the first day of the conference, only big-picture findings concerning a decade of global change research activities will be considered. Over the last decade, significant advances have been made in the understanding of the natural temporal variability of the Earth System, its spatial variability and its predictability. It is against this knowledge base that the effects and consequences of human-driven change must be assessed.
