Abstract
Neuroprotection refers to a set of therapies for preventing neurons from dying as the result of a disease process. It is thus applicable to many ophthalmic disorders of varied etiology. Examples include diseases due to ischemia (as in central retinal artery occlusion or anterior ischemic optic neuropathy), inflammation (as might be seen with a posterior uveitis or cystoid macular edema), hereditary disorders (such as inherited macular and peripheral retinal degenerations, or Leber’s hereditary optic neuropathy). Neuropro-tection may be particularly valuable for glaucoma, a disorder of complex etiology which results in loss of retinal ganglion cells.
