Abstract
Severe hemorrhagic diatheses are complicated by spontaneous joint bleedings. The joint cartilage is damaged through the free intra-articular blood, probably caused by the formation of reactive oxygen metabolites which are catalyzed by iron [18]. Parallel inflammatory reactions occur in the synovial membrane and may lead to a secondary catabolic destruction of the cartilage [7, 12, 18]. This hemophilic arthropathy results in severe secondary arthrosis within a few years. The end stages of hemophilic arthropathy are characterized by severe cartilage destructions, deformities, and fibrous contractures. Especially in the lower extremities, this results in an early handicap. Therefore, timely diagnosis is necessary in cases with clinical and radiological progressive joint destructions.
