Abstract
Presented here are results and discussion for weldability testing on Alloy C-22 weld-metal. The Transvarestraint test was used to determine the solidification cracking susceptibility of the alloy; results indicate that Alloy C-22 is resistant to solidification cracking. The STF test demonstrated that Alloy C-22 weld metal is susceptible to ductility-dip-cracking (DDC); no recovery of cracking resistance was observed at the upper end of the testing temperature range. The hot-ductility test revealed intermediate temperature ductility dips in the ductility signature of Alloy C-22. These solid-state cracking results were surprising considering the fact that Alloy C-22 is known throughout industry to be a very weldable alloy. Discussions are presented regarding the low threshold strain of the alloy, the unique manner in which the alloy does not recover cracking resistance at the upper end of the testing temperature range, and methods through which the elevated temperature ductility of the alloy might be improved.
