Abstract

According to the regulations, every participating country of an IMO is invited to send suggestions for the competition problems. For the 50th IMO 2009 the German problem selection committee (PSC) received 132 problems from 39 countries. The 12-member PSC, under the leadership of Jürgen Prestin who was also Chief Coordinator and Vice Chairman of the Jury, worked on the problems for about 3 months, gradually reducing the total number of submitted problems to a minimum of 30 problems for the shortlist, from which the Jury had to select 6 problems. The PSC chose 8 problems from the fields of both Combinatorics and Geometry, and 7 problems each on Algebra and Number Theory. In addition the PSC tried to provide all possible ways of solving these problems. The shortlist contained up to 5 different solutions. In some cases the formulations of the question-setters were improved or alternative versions were added.
