Abstract

This is a key chapter for a thorough understanding of what actually occurs with an ocular chemical lesion. It tackles the concepts of physiological barriers and the physiological limits of in situ decontamination. It notes the limits between irritation and corrosion by exploring the pathophysiology of ocular burns in great depth. The various physical mechanisms, thermal and chemical, are compared. The differences between liquid, gaseous, or solid chemical agents are analyzed. This chapter equally explains the influence of osmolarity and the characteristics of penetration of the various chemical agents, as well as the direct measurement of the production of inflammatory mediators during the course of chemical burns in experimental models.
