Zusammenfassung
Verfahren zur Vermittlung von Achtsamkeit entstammen östlichen meditativen Traditionen, die über sehr lange Zeiträume verschiedene Methoden zur Förderung von Achtsamkeit entwickelt haben. Meditation allgemein wurde in unterschiedlichen Kontexten und von unterschiedlichen Autoren definiert. Als ein Bespiel mag die Definition von Walsh und Shapiro (2006) dienen, in der bereits das in diesem Buch zentrale Thema »Wohlbefinden « als ein wesentliches Ziel achtsamkeitsbasierter Verfahren angesprochen wird: Der Begriff Meditation bezieht sich auf eine Familie selbstregulatorischer Praktiken, die Aufmerksamkeit und Bewusstheit trainieren, um mentale Prozesse unter stärkere freiwillige Kontrolle zu bekommen und damit allgemeines Wohlbefinden und Entwicklung und/oder spezifische Fertigkeiten wie Ruhe, Klarheit und Konzentration zu fördern (Walsh & Shapiro, 2006, S. 228 f; Übers. und Hervorhebung: T.H.).
