Abstract
The symptoms in hypothyroidism are caused by a deficiency of thyroid hormone in the tissues and the consequences of this on the function of various organs or metabolic processes. Therapy is simple with thyroid hormone substitution.
The goal of treatment for hypothyroidism is to normalize metabolism without adverse effects. During continued therapy, which is nearly always lifelong, the patient must be followed-up regularly to monitor possible dose adjustment, compliance and the onset of associated pathological conditions. The thyroxine dose is based on symptomatic relief and guided by the concentration of TSH. The goal should be to achieve TSH levels that lie between the range 0.4–2.0 mIU/L.
