Abstract
Although a rare entity, multiple fractures of the axis require special attention. Most commonly, one encounters combinations of odontoid and hangman type fractures and/or teardrop fractures simultaneously with fractures of the axis ring. The treatment is strictly individual with some of them requiring surgical fixation. The atlas-axis combined fractures represent approximately 3% of cervical spine injuries. Most of them are treated conservatively; however, in unstable or irreducible cases, surgical intervention can allow for faster healing of correctly aligned spine.
