El hecho de que un evento sonoro pueda ser percibido, presupone la existencia de una cadena sencilla de efectos. Una fuente sonora genera vibraciones de pequeña amplitud en el aire que la rodea y, debido a la compresibilidad y a la masa del aire, estas se propagan y llegan al oído del auditor.
