Zusammenfassung
Bioethanol wird als Kraftstoff für Ottomotoren verwendet. Langfristig ist die Bioethanolproduktion erfolgreich, wenn sie einen niedrigeren Ethanol- als Benzinpreis erlaubt. Bioethanol kann als Kraftstoffbeimischung zu Benzin oder als Hauptbestandteil von Ottokraftstoff eingesetzt werden. Bioethanol ermöglicht eine sauberere Verbrennung als Benzin und besitzt dabei 60 Prozent der Energiedichte von Benzin. Als Beimischung fungiert Bioethanol als Antiklopfmittel und erhöht als Sauerstoffträger die Oktanzahl. Beimischungen mit Volumenverhältnissen von bis zu 10 Prozent bewirken dadurch keine Einschränkung der Eigenschaften von Benzin. Bioethanol wird deswegen in den USA als Ersatz für das Antiklopfmittel MTBE benutzt. Die Beschaffung von Bioethanol über Produzenten mit einer durchschnittlichen Jahresproduktion von 100.000 Tonnen erfordert allerdings einen zusätzlichen logistischen Aufwand für die Ölindustrie. Wenn der Bioethanolpreis niedriger ist als der Benzinpreis, wird die Beimischung trotzdem rentabel und damit attraktiv. Motiviert durch diese wirtschaftliche Attraktivität, setzt sich die Ölindustrie freiwillig für die Beimischung von Bioethanol ein. Die Erfüllung von Quoten wird dadurch auf eine wirtschaftliche Basis gestellt. Sie bringt außrdem durch niedrigere Kraftstoffkosten Vorteile für die Konsumenten. In diesem bereits beobachteten Szenario wird Umweltschutz durch Vorteile für die Volkswirtschaft finanziert und nicht auf Kosten der Volkswirtschaft erzwungen.1
