Abstract

This chapter provides an introduction to the field of biocompatibility of dental materials, including definition of terms, clinical symptoms and basic principles in biocompatibility; e.g. the dose-effect relation principle and the risk concept. In recent years, the importance of the biocompatibility of dental materials as an independent discipline of dental materials science has been recognized. Consequently, a number of terms and principles have been developed or were adopted from toxicology. Some of these terms may seem familiar to patients and dentists alike; for example the term ‘safety’. Their exact definition within the framework of biocompatibility is, however, not always well understood. To avoid misunderstandings and to allow discussions between dentists, manufacturers and patients at an objective and scientific level, a certain knowledge of some fundamental terms and aspects of biocompatibility is necessary.
