Abstract

In this chapter, we develop methods that make explicit use of the geometry of phase space to investigate bound states (that is, discrete spectrum). We apply these methods to determine the essential spectrum and to distinguish the cases of infinitely many, finitely many and no bound states below the essential spectrum.
