Wohlgeformte Beine sind seit Jahrtausenden Körperareale, denen eine wichtige ästhetische und erotische Bedeutung beigemessen wird. Die untere Extremität zählt neben Gesicht, Hals, Dekolleté und Händen zu den wichtigsten ästhetischen Einheiten. Individuelle, hereditäre Faktoren definieren wesentlich die Form und das Aussehen des Beines. Daneben können im Laufe des Lebens häufig Veränderungen auftreten, die kosmetisch unerwünscht sind und als die persönliche Attraktivität beeinflussend wahrgenommen werden. Etliche der angeborenen oder erworbenen kosmetisch oder funktionell störenden Befunde im Bereich der unteren Extremität lassen sich modifizieren.
