The SS 7 network will have a significant impact on the MTP, since the MTP forms the interface at a node with the rest of the SS 7 network. In this respect it is specified in Q.701, section 3 [42] that “the MTP procedures must be independent of the signalling network in that it has to be capable of performing its set functions and attaining its objective no matter what network structure or status prevails.” However, the network structure and network planning has an impact on the function of the MTP procedures, like for example the SS 7 flow control (see Chap. 12). Therefore, the network structure must be carefully selected and the routing data designed to fulfill specific requirements.
