Neben der Beurteilung des Sehnervenkopfes ist die Begutachtung der peripapillären Region zur frühzeitigen Erkennung struktureller Veränderungen durch das Glaukom von größter Bedeutung. Die subjektiven Symptome sind beim Offenwinkelglaukom oft erst im Spätstadium fassbar und leider auch nicht gut und objektiv quantifizierbar. Daher hat die Dokumentation morphologischer Änderungen in den letzten Jahren stark an Bedeutung gewonnen.
