Abstract

From the earliest days until comparatively modern times, surgeons were ignorant about the causes of the vast majority of acute abdominal emergencies and equally ineffectual in their treatment. They were, of course, well familiar with abdominal trauma and the dire consequences of perforating injuries of the belly, the great majority of which would be fatal.
