Benign Tumors of the Nasal Cavity and Paranasal Sinuses

  • Chapter
Rhinology and Facial Plastic Surgery

Abstract

■ There are two important features of benign tumors of the nose and paranasal sinuses: they are rare and they cover a great variety of different tumor entities.

■ Symptoms of tumors of the nose and paranasal sinuses are unspecific in most cases and mimic the clinical picture of inflammatory disorders. Moreover, many tumors are diagnosed by chance in radiological assessment for other reasons.

■ In case of unilateral symptoms, a tumor of the nose/paranasal sinuses should always be considered in order to make the diagnosis without delay.

■ The endoscopic aspect of unilateral nasal polyposis may be the finding of an inverted papilloma.

■ Magnetic resonance imaging should be added to computed tomography in the radiological assessment of tumors of the nose/paranasal sinuses in order to distinguish between tumor extension and associated inflammatory disorders as well as to determine intracranial/orbital involvement.
