Abstract

The abdominal cavity is a vulnerable region of the human body. In general, trauma to the abdomen is caused by blunt impact or by penetration. In automotive accidents, blunt impact is frequently observed although the injury might not be apparent initially. Nonetheless, it may be lifethreatening. In side impacts, for example, it was found that more than one fifth of all severe injuries, i.e. AIS ≥ 4, were abdominal [Rouhana and Foster 1985].
