In this chapter we begin with one-dimensional boundary value problems, then move on to parabolic problems in one space dimension, and finally examine elliptic and parabolic problems in several space dimensions. To understand why it is difficult to solve singularly perturbed problems accurately we shall discuss the asymptotic structure of the solution and the types of layers that may occur in the solution of the problem. Our survey includes finite difference, finite volume and finite element methods.
