Abstract
In this chapter, the role of ions in growth and development in both the Eumycota and Oomycota is discussed. We have focused this review on the role of exogenous ions and their effects on cells and have left a discussion of the role of Ca2+ ion in signal transduction to other reviews. Cations play a pivotal role in determining the efficiency of attachment of fungal spores to the substratum and thus the presence of cation in part, determines whether a germinating spore will successfully colonize a given substrate. For example, conidia of the grape pathogen Phyllosticta ampelicida do not germinate unless attached to their substratum and this attachment is greatly enhanced by the presence of ion. The development of appressoria, a specialized infection structure, is also enhanced by the availability of cation in P. ampelicida and other fungi. The influence of ion on fruit body formation in also discussed.
