Abstract
Diagnostic laparoscopic examination of the abdominal cavity has become increasingly popular with general surgeons over the past 20 years. The procedure is carried out with the patient under general anaesthetic and lying supine on the operating table. The first step in the operation is to create a pneumoperitoneum, which may be done using either the open (‘Hasson’) technique or the closed technique.
