Die ersten Aufzeichnungen über die chirurgische Behandlung des Mammakarzinoms stammen wahrscheinlich aus medizinischen Fallberichten des alten Ägyptens zwischen 3000 und 2500 Jahre v. Chr. Sie sind unter dem Namen ≫Edwin Smith Surgical Papyrus≪ bekannt (Breasted 1930). Aus diesen Abhandlungen geht hervor, dass die Ärzte des alten Ägyptens Brusttumoren chirurgisch entfernten. Bereits damals bestanden erheblich unterschiedliche Ansichten darüber, wie die chirurgische Therapie des Mammakarzinoms aussehen sollte. Hippokrates (460-377 v. Chr.) war der Ansicht, dass es sich beim Mammakarzinom um eine systemische Erkrankung handelt. Die Entfernung des Primärtumors wirkte sich, seiner Auffassung nach, eher ungünstig auf den Erkrankungsverlauf aus. Er warnte: ≫Es ist besser, okkulte Tumore nicht zu entfernen, denn die operierten Frauen werden sterben, während die anderen länger leben≪ (Wood 1994).
