Regulation of Gene Expression During Aging

  • Chapter
The Molecular Genetics of Aging

Part of the book series: Results and Problems in Cell Differentiation ((RESULTS,volume 29))

Abstract

The phenomenon of aging is generally believed to be genetically determined and environmentally modulated. Although genetics plays a major role in the determination of life span, the mechanisms by which genetic elements determine life span are poorly understood. Models range from specific highly deterministic genetically based programs to genetically defined constitutions (Finch 1990). One of the major foci in modern molecular gerontology is the mechanistic role that the genome plays in the aging process and life span.
