Dynamics and Control of Smart Structures Using Piezoelectric Actuators and Sensors

Coupling of Fluids, Structures and Waves in Aeronautics

Summary

In this paper, three piezoelectric modal sensor/actuator design methods for vibration control of smart plates are introduced. In the first method, the modal actuator and modal sensor are designed by modulating the thickness of the piezoelectric actuator and sensor layers. In the second method, the distributed piezoelectric element (DPE) method, the modal actuator and sensor are designed based on segmentation of the piezoelectric actuator layer fully covered on the host plate. In the third method, the quasi-modal sensors and quasi-modal actuators are developed using several piezoelectric patches, and optimization criteria are given for finding the optimal locations and sizes of these patches in order to minimize the observation and control spillovers.
