Abstract

The \(b\bar{b}\) production cross section has been measured using the HERA-B detector in 920 GeV proton collisions on carbon and titanium targets. We used the data collected in a short period in summer 2000 during the commissioning of the detector and trigger before the HERA upgrade began. The \(b\bar{b}\) events were identified via inclusive bottom quark decays producing a J/ψ by exploiting the longitudinal separation of the J/ψl+l-#8211; decay vertices from the primary proton-nucleus interactions, which benefits from the excellent resolution of the HERA-B silicon vertex detector. Both e+e+#8211; and μ+μ+#8211; channels have been reconstructed and the combined analysis yields the cross section \(\sigma(b\bar{b})=32^{+14}_{-12}(\mbox{stat})^{+6}_{-7}(\mbox{sys})\) nb/nucleon [1]. Our result is in good agreement with the latest QCD calculations beyond next-to-leading order and is compatible with the two previous measurements of the \(b\bar{b}\) production cross section in proton-nucleus collisions.
