Aufgabe des respiratorischen Systems — und damit der Atmung — ist einerseits die Bereitstellung von Sauerstoff (O2) für die Organe und die chemischen Prozesse der Energiegewinnung aus Kohlenhydraten. Andererseits bewirkt die Atmung die Elimination von Kohlendioxid (CO2), das im Metabolismus anfälllt. Obwohl CO2 oft nur als Abfallprodukt des Stoffwechsels betrachtet wird, spielt es eine zentrale Rolle für das Säurebasengleichgewicht im inneren Milieu des Körpers.
