Früherkennung in der Onkologie hat zum Ziel, eine onkologische Erkrankung so frühzeitig zu erkennen, dass sie noch dauerhaft geheilt werden kann. Früherkennung wendet sich an apparent gesunde (asymptomatische) Menschen, von denen nur eine geringe Zahl unerkannt erkrankt ist. Deshalb ist es eine ethische Verpflichtung, den erzielbaren Nutzen gegen die Belastungen der an Früherkennungsmaβnahmen teilnehmenden Bevölkerung sorgfältig abzuwägen. An die Evidenz für den Nutzen und die Qualität der Untersuchung sind bei Früherkennungsmaβnahmen besonders hohe Anforderungen zu stellen, damit sichergestellt ist, dass der erwartete Nutzen auch tatsächlich eintritt.
