The object of the analysis is some ‚item‛ i, which is a relative persistent trait or disposition (e. g., the beating of the heart) occurring in a system s (e. g. the body of a living vertebrate) and the analysis aims to show that s is in a state, or internal condition c i and in an environment representing certain external conditions c e such that under conditions c i and c e (jointly to be referred c) the trait i has effects which satisfy some ‚need‛ or ‚functional requirement‛ of s, i. e., a condition n which is necessary for the system‘s remaining in adequate, or effective, or proper, working order.” (Hempel 1959, 280).
