Zusammenfassung

Wenn »Extremismus« als Antithese zur »guten Gesellschaft« in Stellung gebracht wird, ist die vorherrschende Vorstellung von jener »guten Gesellschaft« und ihrer »Mitte« ausschlaggebend dafür, wie »Extremismus« definiert wird. Dies arbeitet der Artikel anhand zweier Beispiele – hegemonialer Diskurse um nationale Identität im Vereinigten Königreich und der Bundesrepublik Deutschland – heraus und argumentiert auf dieser Grundlage für eine dezidiert politische Auseinandersetzung um demokratische Grenzziehungen. Kritik am Extremismus-Modell nimmt so die Form eines gegenhegemonialen Projekts an. Zentral für die Analyse sind die Hegemonietheorie von Ernesto Laclau und Chantal Mouffe sowie Sarah Ahmeds Begriff der Nicht-Performativität.
