Zusammenfassung

Die Entwicklung der internationalen Ordnung ist bis in die Gegenwart eng mit der Geschichte der Diplomatie verbunden. Sowohl für die großen Fragen von Krieg und Frieden, als auch auch für zahlreiche Problembereiche der internationalen Politik stellt die Diplomatie als institutionalisiertes Kommunikations- und Verhandlungssystem ein relevantes Handlungsfeld dar. Funktionen und Formen der Diplomatie als Instrument außenpolitischen Regierungshandelns erstrecken sich heute von der traditionellen Friedens- und Krisendiplomatie bis zur erzwingenden Diplomatie, Gipfel- und Konferenzdiplomatie sowie neuen Ausprägungsformen einer im 21. Jahrhundert sich grundlegend verändernden modernen Diplomatie, deren Entwicklung von innergesellschaftlichen und globalen Herausforderungen (Umbrüchen in der internationalen Ordnung, Digitalisierung, globalen Märkten, neuen Öffentlichkeiten, Vertrauensverlust in politische Institutionen) beeinflusst wird.
