Zusammenfassung
Von ihrer Lage her kann man die antiken H. grundsätzlich in See-H. und Fluß-H. einteilen. Funktional lassen sich Verkehrs-, Handels- und Kriegs-H. unterscheiden, wobei vor allem in den ersten beiden Fällen die Zweckbestimmungen auch zusammenfallen konnten. Im Rahmen der Historischen Geographie interessieren die antiken H. in erster Linie im Hinblick auf ihre topographische Situation und auf die Maßnahmen, die getroffen wurden, um die Sicherheit der Schiffe vor den Naturelementen zu gewährleisten.
