Zusammenfassung

Physikalische Theorien: Die Vorsokratiker des 6./5. Jahrhunderts v.Chr. (Anaximander, Anaximenes, Empedokles, Heraklit, Anaxagoras) reflektierten über die K. in ihrer Deutung kosmologischer Entwicklungen. K. (wie auch Wärme) galt entweder als ein eigenes Primärelement oder wurde mit den Elementen in Verbindung gesetzt, was in den hippokratischen Schriften systematisiert wurde: K. wurde abwechselnd mit Erde, Wasser oder Luft in Beziehung gebracht. Im medizinischen Denken wurde Gesundheit und Zeugung (K. gebiert weibliche Wesen) von Temperatureinflüssen abhängig gemacht. Aristoteles baute die Theorie von der K. als einer Fundamentalqualität weiter aus und stellte sie als Negation der (positiv verstandenen) Wärme gegenüber. Im 4. Buch der Meteorologie, das bisweilen auch späteren Verfassern zugeschrieben wurde, liegt eine wegweisende rationale Erklärung der Wirkung von K. und Wärme vor. Der Peripatos erweiterte dies durch empirische Studien: Theophrast legte dazu eine eigene Schrift vor (Diog. Laert. 5,44), sein Nachfolger Straton von Lampsakos trat mit einer später vielbeachteten K.-Wärme-Theorie hervor (vgl. Sen. nat. 6,13). Philon von Byzanz (2. Jahrhundert v.Chr.) und Heron von Alexandrien (1. Jahrhundert n.Chr.) führten mit ihren Thermoskopen erste wissenschaftliche Experimente mit unterschiedlichen Temperaturen durch. Einen zusammenfassenden Uberblick über die philosophischen Lehrmeinungen vermittelt Plutarch (1./2. Jahrhundert), der in der K. zwar einen eigenen Stoff annahm, aber gegen dogmatische Fixierungen skeptisch blieb (Plut. mor. 945F–955C). Der Arzt Galen (späteres 2. Jahrhundert n.Chr.) teilte die als eigene Qualität gedeutete K. in vier Stufen, die am menschlichen Körper erkennbar seien und dessen Befinden prägen. Eine quantitative Temperaturmessung kannte das Altertum nicht.
