Transdniestria: Old Problems, New Developments

  • Chapter
Prospects and Risks Beyond EU Enlargement

Abstract

There are several dimensions to the Transdniestrian issue. The first is engendered by the existence of an illegal territorial-administrative entity called the “Transdniestrian Moldovan Republic” (“TMR”), which in the early 90s unilaterally proclaimed its independence and since then has managed to create and sustain the public institutions of an unrecognized state. The Republic of Moldova has never recognized this independence and has always claimed sovereignty over the Transdniestrian territory, a claim which has been supported by the international community as a whole. Since at least the early 90s the official policy of Chişinău authorities has been peaceful resolution of this conflict situation by granting special autonomy status to the Transdniestrian region within the Republic of Moldova. It is implied that such a solution may be achieved only on the basis of a negotiated agreement between Chişinău and Tiraspol. Until now, however, very little, if any, progress has been achieved.
