Zusammenfassung
Die Suche nach den Bestimmungsgründen des Unternehmenserfolgs bildet das gemeinsame Fundament für Wissenschaft und Praxis auf dem Gebiet der strategischen Unternehmensführung. Während die Wissenschaft ein vordergründiges Interesse an einer theoriegeleiteten Paradigmenbildung hat, um auf Basis robuster forschungsmethodischer Ansätze prognosevalide und generalisierbare Aussagen hinsichtlich alternativer strategischer Optionen ableiten zu können, liegt das Augenmerk der Managementpraxis auf der einzelfallspezifischen Anwendung erfolgsbewährter Handlungsmuster auf konkrete Alltagsprobleme (vgl. Rasche 2002a). In beiden Fällen wird versucht, den Unternehmenserfolg möglichst kausal im Sinne strategischer Erfolgsfaktoren zu erklären, damit dieser strategisch vorgesteuert und operativ realisiert werden kann (vgl. z.B. Ghemawat 1991, Kaplan/Norton 1996 und 2001, Kay 1996, Porter 1991, Varadarajan/Jayachandran 1999). Die Rasterfahndung nach den Vorsteuergrößen des Unternehmenserfolgs — ungeachtet desssen problematischer Operationalisierung — kulminiert im strategischen Management in dem gedanklichen Konstrukt des Wettbewerbsvorteils und damit eng assoziierter Termini (z.B. strategische Erfolgsposition, komparativer Konkurrenzvorteil, Unique Selling Proposition). Selbstredend wird dabei häufig auf Basis von Plausibilitätsüberlegungen ein Wettbewerbsvorteils-/Performance-Automatismus unterstellt, ohne diese Prämisse kritisch zu hinterfragen. Zudem hat bis auf wenige Ausnahmen eine differenzierte Auseinandersetzung mit dem Konstrukt der Wettbewerbsnachteile und dessen Auswirkungen auf den Unternehmenserfolg im strategischen Management nur sporadisch stattgefunden (vgl. Powell 2001 und 2003, Proff 2002).
“(…) strategy scholars should acknowledge that the search for sustainable competitive advantages almost certainly arises from a false mental picture, namely the idea that a competitive advantage resides somewhere in time and space, findable in the same way that we find a misplaced fountain pen, or a sunken ship.” (…)
In the best case, competitive advantage serves as a metaphor, a language game or way of seeing that directs scholars to remove problems that lie in the way of dicovery about sustained superior performance.” (Powell 2001, S. 885)
