Zusammenfassung
Die Klubtheorie entstand als eine Variation der Theorie der kollektiven Güter (Buchanan 1965) und beschäftigt sich mit Organisationen, die keine — oder nicht ausschließlich reine — Kollektivgüter bereitstellen. Zum einen unterliegen Klubgüter einem rivalisierenden Nutzen. Anders als bei reinen Kollektivgütern wird die Erweiterung der Organisation dadurch zum Problem, da neue Mitglieder nicht nur willkommene zusätzliche Beitragszahler, sondern auch rivalisierende Nutzer des Klubgutes sind. Zum anderen können Akteure jedoch von der Nutzung eines Klubgutes ausgeschlossen werden. Wiederum im Gegensatz zu reinen Kollektivgütern kann die Organisation den Zugang zum Klubgut durch Verleihung von Mitgliedschaftsrechten zu geringen Kosten regulieren. Anders gesagt: Klubs müssen und können die Größe ihrer Mitgliedschaft beschränken, um eine effiziente Produktion und Nutzung des Klubguts zu gewährleisten.
