Biomechanic Principles of Reverse Shoulder Prosthesis

Abstract

This chapter will analyze the different aspects of the reverse shoulder prosthesis biomechanics from the beginning, when it was developed in the 1970s by Grammont, to the latest designs through the different models proposed by surgeons worldwide. Many aspects of this innovative system are important to give good function to the shoulder and to avoid a number of complications linked to this surgery. Prosthesis design, component position, and soft tissue management will be described in order to understand how this “unanatomical” system could give a new function to a shoulder with cuff tear arthropathy or complex fracture.
