Older People: Improving Health and Social Care

Abstract

The European Core Competence Framework (ECCF) describes the baseline competences for competent professionals working with older people in health and social care. The overarching goal of the ECCF is to improve the care and support for older people in our ageing societies and changing health and social care systems all over Europe. This chapter outlines how the ECCF is organised in seven roles, competences and performance indicators. The competences are described for the seven roles of the health and social care professional: the Expert, Communicator, Collaborator, Organiser, Health and Welfare Advocate, Scholar and Professional. The seven roles are based on the widely used CanMEDS Physician Competency Framework. For each role, competences are defined, and all the 18 competences are elaborated in performance indicators.
