Abstract
Clinical nurse specialists (CNSs) are advanced practice nurses and are prepared in graduate nursing programs with curriculum specifically designed to prepare CNSs. This chapter discusses educational standards for use in developing a CNS program curriculum. The discussion includes foundational standards underpinning graduate nursing education, standards and recommendations for preparing nurses in advanced clinically focused functional roles, and standards and competencies for preparing clinical nurse specialists. Criteria for evaluating and accrediting CNS programs are also discussed. By using the standards and guidelines discussed in this chapter or others, CNS faculty will have the tools necessary to create a robust curriculum for preparing CNSs for expert specialty practice in a variety of clinical settings.
