Abstract

In this chapter we offer a multidisciplinary review of research pertinent to the process of partnering across race. We use quantitative and qualitative investigations in the fields of communication, psychology, sociology, and demographic studies to illustrate how the process of partnering is multilayered and is impacted by forces known and unknown to the couple. We explore the ways in which interracial partner attraction, courting, and relationship initiation are influenced by factors such as individual beliefs about race, social network approval or disapproval, demography, and communication patterns. We conclude this chapter with a discussion on future trends and the impact of a diverse American population on these trends.
