Abstract

Within this chapter, the important distinction between habit, compulsion, and addiction is explained, particularly with regard to our personal technologies. The term smartphone addiction has become over-sensationalized, but there is some evidence that warrants a closer look at the gravitational pull that our smartphones possess. In particular, the chapter reviews the consequential effects of incessant phone-checking and how this can lead to more serious psychological and physiological manifestations.
