Abstract

Having charted the dandy’s various guises and disguises, the conclusion now summarizes the different traits of the paradigm of political dandyism. This paradigm centres upon the promise of a future, harmonious community. But it is a promise that for some mysterious reason must remain unredeemed forever. The harmonious community that the dandy promises is based upon an idealized image of the past. In a way, the dandy promises a new community by returning to the past. Dandies come and dandies go, but this harmonious community is a community that most likely was not, is not, and will never be realized. Still, there is a more general lesson to be drawn from the politics of the political dandy. Despite all the ruminations over politics as a form of rational and verbal deliberation, it is and always will be, first and foremost, a matter of the senses.
