Secular Nationalism and Citizenship in Muslim Countries

Abstract

Sami El-Yousef explores the substantial presence of the Christian institutions in the Holy Land. Jerusalem is the seat of 13 heads of churches and there are over 125 Catholic religious congregations in Israel and Palestine. Some are monastic in nature, while others are service apostolates.

While the actual number of Christians in the Holy Land is declining, the Catholic Church continues its contributions to education, social services and healthcare. The challenges include the lack of funds and cultural-social constraints, among them the interpretations of Islamic customs and laws imposed on the Catholic Church in running their institutions in places such as Gaza, and the Arab-Israeli conflict and an ongoing 50-year Israeli occupation.
